File Module - Linking to a File

If a file cannot be opened directly in a web browser, users will be prompted to download it to their computer. As mentioned in Stage 2, PDF (Portable Document Format) files are especially useful, as most web browsers can open them without requiring additional software.
Files added through the File module can be displayed in different ways. For instance, they can be embedded on a course page, opened in a pop-up window, or made available for download. Another advantage is that instructors can access detailed reports on how learners interact with the file through Activity and other reporting tools. This level of tracking is not as readily available when files are shared using other course tools.
One limitation of the File module is that adding many individual files can make the course page long and difficult to navigate, especially when there is a lot of text. For this reason, it is recommended to use the Folder module when sharing multiple files.
Using the File Module to Support Blended Learning
This is especially useful for instructors aiming to reduce paper use or those with limited access to printing and photocopying. Learners who prefer printed materials can download and print the files themselves before class.
Instructors can also share digital media that may not be available online. For example, audio or video recordings used in lessons, or recordings created by the instructor using a smartphone or tablet, can be uploaded and shared with learners.
In addition, PowerPoint presentations, grading rubrics, and spreadsheets can all be distributed using the File module. Overall, this feature provides a flexible way to bring classroom materials into the online learning environment.
Exemplar
A sample File resource is available in the Stage 2/3 Exemplar Course. It is called Sample File - Oral Communication Tip Sheet and can be found in the Sample Stage 3 Activities and Resources section.
